WHAT'S ON ? - Croydon Chess kicked off its Term 2 program with two Rapid Play Knockout Tournaments. T his week, 5th May, we're having an informal "coffee-house" night.  Come along and enjoy the fun! All visitors most welcome!

MAKING THE CLUB FAMILY FRIENDLY - for those playing in the rated senior tournaments during the rest of the year, we have made a minor adjustment to make these tournaments more "family friendly" as a number of people (incl. myself) have school-age children who are ready to start taking on the adults in a serious game.  Rather than the longer time limits previously advertised (90min+30sec), all our rated tournaments will be run at a time limit of 60 minutes + 15 seconds/move which means that most games should finish by 10PM.

JUNIOR COACHING - a reminder for parents: Junior coaching starts up again next week. Cost is $35/term as before.

COUNCIL FUNDING - our club was successful in applying for funding from Maroondah Council and we have been able to use those funds to help in acquiring some of our own equipment.  We're now the proud owners of 12 sets of boards/pieces as well as 12 digital clocks.  This is a great leap forward, and we wish to thank both Maroondah Council for the funding as well as Gary Wastell from Chess Victoria for lending us boards/pieces/clocks during our startup phase.

CHESS VICTORIA - Croydon Chess will soon be affiliated with Chess Victoria.  "Provisional affiliation" has already been granted, subject to the appropriate paperwork and fees being paid (this is in progress as I write this).

MEMBERSHIP GROWTH - membership of the club currently stands at 25 (adults + juniors) which is a great effort to start the year off.  A special thank you to all those who have demonstrated support for the club as we strive to build momentum and a strong foundation for the future.  It would be great if we could build towards a total of 50 members by the end of 2005.  To achieve this we will need to undertake some promotions in the community.  If you are able to help with this area (e.g. by setting aside an hour or so once in a while to come and play chess in a local shopping centre, or a similar kind of activity, so that people become aware that we exist!), please speak to me any night at the club.

Kind regards to all,

Stephen Frost
